Goalie Tips

6. Effectively doing up goalie pads

Thanks to Bill and Patrick for suggesting this weeks goalie tip via e-mail.

Often times goalies can get stung with an unexpected puck to the knee if they are not careful. Most pucks hit an open spot when the pad accidentally twists on your leg if they are too loose. This can easily be prevented. Here are some tips to follow.

1. The Heel Straps are done up tight as they can go to prevent twisting in the pad.

2. The lower two leg straps go tight (to a "snug" fit) keeping the pad from twisting.

3. The inside Velcro knee strap goes snug around the knee, and the thigh pad should be "snug" as well.

*If your pad does not have a built in thigh pad, and you use a goalie knee pad, make sure the straps of the knee pad are snug so it doesn't shift.

4. The 3rd, 4th, (and 5th) leg straps go progressively looser to prevent cutting of blood circulation in the leg when you go down to make a save.

Note: When I say "Snug" I mean tight, but at the same time not restricting any blood circulation.

This is an effective way to do up goalie pads, and should prevent the pad from twisting, and prevent most pucks from hitting the inside of the knee.

If you still have problems with pucks to the knee, additional padding such as volleyball knee pads, rollerblade knee pads or even the specialized goalie knee pads will help a great deal.
