Goalie Tips

4. Properly Taping the Blade of your Goalie Stick

This week, we take a look at taping your goalie stick. Taking the time to tape your stick properly will help your stick last longer! (Your parents will thank you!) Here is an illustrated demonstration for you, taking it step-by-step. (Click the images for a bigger view)

1. Begin with your stick and roll of white hockey tape. Make sure your stick doesn't have any snow or water built up on it as it will keep the tape from sticking.

White Hockey Tape is best for goalies to use because it allows us to easily see the black puck when it is on our stick.

2. First, take a strip of tape half the length of your blade and wrap it around the heel. This helps to keep the bottom from wearing.

3. Next start to tape the blade, starting at the heel. Begin at the edge of the strip of tape from step 2. To tape around the corner of the blade make a "V" as seen here.

4. Continue to wrap the tape around the blade. Make sure that each layer overlaps each other just a little bit so snow won't build up in between.

5. Stop taping, just before the end of the blade (the toe of the blade). The finished product should look something like this.

6. Lastly, use hockey stick wax (or a candle) and rub it over the blade so that all the tape gets a nice waxy coating. Wax protects the tape from absorbing water, and snow won't stick to your blade.
