| All goalies need to learn how to handle the
puck properly. This is especially true these days when special teams (power
play/penalty kill) are a huge part in deciding the outcome of a hockey game.
Proper glove
position will help with handling the puck. Goalies who catch with his/her
left hand must be able to slide the right hand (blocker) to the top of the
stick and place the goalie stick in the pocket of the glove. Similar to the
image on the right.

For southpaw goalies (goalies who catch with their right hand) they must be able
to slide their left hand (blocker) to the top of the stick and place the
goalie stick in the pocket of their catching glove.
Some goalies who have played other positions might have shot the opposite
way to the way they play goal. Their first reaction will be to turn the
hands around when asked to pass or shoot. They have to learn to slide the
blocker up, and the catching glove down low. All goalies also need to work
on sharp, one-handed passes as well. One-handed passes will develop as you
get older and develop stronger wrists.
A note to coaches: Don't let your
goalies take their gloves off to handle the puck. Younger goalies who
struggle with stickhandling may try to put the gloves on the top of the net
and stickhandle barehanded. Not only is this dangerous, it also delays
learning the proper technique they'll need. |
