GOALIE TIPS

4. Blocker Talk

A goalies blocker hand often goes unnoticed in a hockey game. The saves we make with it are never as flashy as the glove hand, but its role in stopping pucks is equally important.

The key in having a strong blocker hand is control. Being able to direct pucks shot at the blocker out of the way of a rebound is an art that takes lots of practice.

Here are some pointers

Keep blocker waist high, slightly out in front of your body

Square the blocker face to the puck at all times

Visually track pucks shot to the blocker side

Rotate your wrist when the puck hits the blocker to direct pucks out of harms way

With this in mind, Bigger blockers are not necessarily better. The goaltender needs to be able to move his arm without difficulty. Look for a nice light blocker with good protection for the fingers.
